Student, Environment, Task and Tools (SETT)

The SETT Framework (Zabala, 1995) is a conceptual tool that helps teams gather and organize information that can be used to guide collaborative decisions about services, including assistive technology. SETT is an acronym for Student, Environments, Tasks and Tools.

The SETT Framework is based on the premise that in order to develop an appropriate system of Tools (e.g. various supports including AT as well as services, strategies, accommodations, or modifications) teams must first develop a shared understanding of the student, the customary environments in which the student spends time, and the tasks that are required for the student to be able to do in order to be an active participant in the teaching/learning process.

The following questions guide the discussion.

The Student — What is(are) the functional area(s) of concern for this student?

The Environments — Describe the environment including the room arrangement, types of instruction occurring, materials and equipment commonly used by others in the setting, any access issue whether physical or related to technology and equipment, and, if relevant, any attitudes or expectations that are observed.

The Tasks — What specific tasks such as reading for meaning or producing legible written responses are necessary for the student to be successful?
