Veteran's Administration
(VA)
VA benefits
include durable medical equipment. VA hospitals provide
equipment recommendation services through the hospital's "Prosthetic
Field Officer" who authorizes the expenditure for a "VA
approved" piece of equipment. Person needs to be registered
with a VA facility for coverage. Most often, request must be
made within the VA network facilities.
Community
Service Organizations
Many communities
have service organizations, which have a not-for-profit charter.
Examples of such organizations
include the Kiwanis
club, Rotary, etc. A person in need, his/her family member
or neighbors,
may be a member of one of these organizations. In addition,
these organizations can be approached to support AT needs
identified by a service delivery program in the community, especially
at
the end
of their fiscal year when they have to "spend down" so
as not to carry a profit over to the next fiscal year.
Alternative
Financing
Under Title
III of the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 and under the New
Freedom Initiative, Rehabilitation
Services
Administration (RSA) has provided grants to states for
the creation of Alternative
Funding programs. These alternative funding programs are
designed to provide other funding opportunities beyond
medical insurance
or educational payers. For more information, contact The
RESNA Alternative
Financing Technical Assistance Project (AFTAP) http://www.resna.org/AFTAP/,
which provides technical assistance to State Financial
Loan Programs.
Consumer’s can approach local banks for a traditional loan.
Some banks have special programs, with favorable lending
terms, when the loan officer is
made aware of the AT need for which the loan is being requested.
