Jim: Real World Writing System
Success Story

Module Objectives

pencilIntroduce a case study of an individual with a disability that affects the ability to write.

Discuss how this condition plays out in a school setting, the diagnosis, and work plan.

Outline the writing system that has worked in this example and the decision process behind it.

Follow this student's progress through school, supported by staff and parents.

Specify how the SETT Framework assisted in providing the appropriate tools to achieve a successful writing system.

Jim is a 13-year-old in the 7th grade at Miller Middle School. Jim has both a high I.Q. and hypotonia – a medical condition affecting his muscle tone.

In Jim’s case, the hypotonia primarily affects hand function, making it difficult for him to produce legible handwriting for more than short periods. He walks with no difficulty, but tires easily and has difficulty carrying objects weighing over four pounds for any distance.

Jim has a dual educational diagnosis of gifted and orthopedically impaired. He is enrolled in accelerated classes and also receives consultative services from the school district’s occupational therapist.
